Transport

Lauaxeta Ikastola

A total of 29 buses take our students to and from the centre each day. The transport is organised at the start of the school year, taking into account the families’ suggestions for catering to the existing needs and improving the service.

From Monday to Thursday there is an additional transport service for the extracurricular activities.

The Ikastola Management also ensures that the service documentation is up to date for maximum safety of the transport.

Canteen

The meals eaten at the Ikastola are prepared in its own kitchen, and they contemplate all the special dietary needs acknowledged by registered medical practitioners.

A fully-guaranteed catering company is in charge of deciding and supplying the menu options, in accordance with dietary and nutritional principles and observing health and hygiene standards for food preparation.

As to the monitoring and management of the canteen, for Pre-primary and Primary the teachers and a team of auxiliary staff look after the children. For Secondary and Post-Secondary, this work is done by collaborators.

Menu audits are carried out every two years, with a view to improving the work done in the kitchen and canteen. As a result, the following improvements have been made:

  • Frying has been replaced by culinary techniques requiring less oil, such as roasting.
  • Egg-based dishes are now served one more day per week.
  • Less high-fat meat preparations are served (sausages, hamburgers, etc.).
  • Fruit is served more often as a dessert and 4 rations are served instead of 3, thus encouraging the consumption of fibre, vitamins and minerals.
  • Dairy products are served as a dessert once a week, helping reduce the amount of simple sugars consumed.
  • The hamaiketako (mid-morning snack) provided to all Pre-primary and Primary children is always fruit, thus increasing the amount of fruit eaten by the students during the day. Click on the «download» button to view the menu.

Bertoko plan

Lauaxeta Ikastola’s Bertoko Plan is one of the key features of the canteen.

This Plan consists of a commitment to increasing the percentage of products on the menu obtained from local, non-industrial suppliers. Click on the link below to find out more about the Bertoko Plan.

Training in nutrition

Healthy eating is something that is learnt on a day-to-day basis, so each year we run a training plan about how the canteen is managed for students of different age groups. It includes the following activities, among others:

  • Visit to Gasca’s central facilities (for students in the third year of secondary education)
  • A talk on nutrition, food-related illness etc. (for students in the third year of secondary education)
  • Writing food-related posts for the Lauaxeta Ikastola blog
  • Gaining first-hand knowledge of jobs and professional outlets in the sector: chef, dietetics and nutrition, etc. (for post-secondary students)
  • Improving the termly menu: low CO2 footprint menus, healthy low-fat food, local produce, organic produce (for all students)
  • Surprise foreign meals: Asian, Italian or Mexican food (for secondary and post-secondary students)
  • Occasional surprise menu changes: homemade San Jacobos, hamburgers, stuffed omelette and pizza (for post-secondary students)
  • Annual training course (for the kitchen manager)
  • Training in food handling, processing and organisation (for all the kitchen staff)

Cooperative service for accessing learning materials

The ikastola offers a service for acquiring the necessary learning materials for each level (iPads, computers, books, etc.), at special bulk purchase prices.

A maintenance service is also offered for technology devices acquired via the ikastola, so that the families do not have to worry about this aspect.

The ikastola also provides a photocopying service throughout the school year.

First aid

Lauaxeta Ikastola has a first aid service.

This service is covered by a professional auxiliary clinic, which provides minor first aid and attends to any students who are feeling unwell. In case of accident, they are taken to the corresponding health centre.
